FORNAX

SCIENCE CLOUD PLATFORM

FORNAX IS THE NEXT GENERATION OF APPLICATIONS AND SOFTWARE FOR ASTROPHYSICS SCIENCE. IT USES CLOUD TECHNONOGIOES, AND IS BUILT UPON OPEN-SOURCE RESEARCH SOFTWARE.

 CHALLENGE

TPM was commissioned to provide end-to-end Systems Engineering support for the FORNAX initiative, a cloud-native platform and infrastructure leveraging open-source research software. An extensive repository of notebooks and pre-built software containers tailored for multi-wavelength and big-data scientific analyses. Cutting-edge data services facilitating rapid, location-independent access to vast datasets spanning cloud resources, NASA archives, and global repositories.

 ACTIONS

  • Project Management - TPM Project Manager and engineering management team, designed the plan, worked on the budget request, coordinated resources and communicated with key stakeholders during the entire software development lifecycle (SDLC), using Agile methodologies (JIRA), in support for the FORNAX project. Development of Documentation and Management of Lifecycle Reviews.

  • Technical Solution Architecture - Defining the requirements, Architecture, Concept of Operations (ConOps), Test Plans, components, modules, interfaces, and data flows within the NASA astrophysics division systems as well as determining how these elements interact to achieve the desired functionality and meet the requirements of the stakeholders. Analyses of Alternatives, Cyber Security Architecture.

  • Development, Security and Operations (DEVSECOPS)/ Cloud Computing – Platform development, test, operations, documentation, management of the CI/CD pipeline, security, training, help desk functions, Data Cloud Migration tasks.

  • Organizational Transformation - TPM supported the internal reorganization as the project evolved from a concept (prototype) to an organization that continuously assesses and evolves technologies to meet the needs of the international community of astrophysics data scientists.
